The principles he introduced more than five decades ago continue to form the foundation of contemporary quality systems, patient safety frameworks, clinical governance models, and healthcare service evaluation approaches.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>\u201cQuality in healthcare is not the result of chance. It is the result of systematic planning, measurement, evaluation, and continuous improvement.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>In 1966, through his landmark work on the assessment of healthcare quality, Donabedian introduced the model that would transform the way quality in healthcare services is approached worldwide. The now widely recognized <strong>Donabedian Model of Care<\/strong> introduced a framework for evaluating quality through three interconnected dimensions:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Structure<\/strong> \u2013 the resources, infrastructure, people, and systems that support the delivery of care.<\/li><li><strong>Process<\/strong> \u2013 the way in which care is delivered and clinical and administrative practices are implemented.<\/li><li><strong>Outcomes<\/strong> \u2013 the impact of care on patients\u2019 health, safety, and experience.<\/li><\/ul><p>This approach became the foundation upon which most subsequent international quality standards, healthcare evaluation systems, clinical effectiveness indicators, patient safety mechanisms, and modern clinical governance policies were developed.<\/p><p>Through his extensive academic and research work, Donabedian demonstrated that quality is not limited solely to clinical outcomes, but also encompasses accessibility, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, patient acceptability, safety, and the overall value that healthcare services generate for society.<\/p><p><strong>His Legacy Today<\/strong><\/p><p>The ideas of Avedis Donabedian continue to guide international efforts towards improving healthcare services. The <strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong>, the <strong>Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)<\/strong>, the <strong>European Commission<\/strong>, accreditation organizations, and leading international centers for quality and patient safety continue to base their approaches on the principles he established.<\/p><p>Quality, patient safety, outcome measurement, patient experience, healthcare service evaluation, and <strong>Value-Based Healthcare<\/strong> represent today a natural continuation of his vision and intellectual legacy.<\/p><p><strong>The Legacy of Donabedian and the Work of the Institute<\/strong><\/p><p>The <strong>Euro-Mediterranean Institute of Quality and Safety in Health Services<\/strong> proudly carries the name of Avedis Donabedian, recognizing his lasting contribution to the establishment of the principles that guide all aspects of its activities.<\/p><p>The Institute\u2019s key areas of action \u2014 patient safety, clinical governance, clinical audits, development of quality indicators, healthcare service evaluation, healthcare professional education, implementation of international standards, and promotion of value-based healthcare \u2014 draw inspiration from the principles established by Donabedian and continue to advance his vision for better, safer, and more equitable healthcare systems.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>\u201cThe secret of quality is love. You have to love your patient, you have to love your profession. If you truly have love for what you do, then you can work to improve the system and make it better.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>This statement perhaps best reflects the philosophy of Avedis Donabedian: that behind every standard, every indicator, and every process there is always a person and our responsibility to provide the best possible care.\u00a0
