The European Society of Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Therapy (ESRA) is the official European scientific organization for Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy. Since its establishment in 1982, it has played a pivotal role in advancing scientific knowledge, issuing clinical guidelines and providing specialized training to health professionals internationally.

As part of its strategy to strengthen organizational effectiveness, transparency and the quality of services offered to its members and trainees, ESRA developed a comprehensive Quality Management System in accordance with the international standard ISO 9001:2015.

Project Scope

The Euro‑Mediterranean Institute for Quality and Safety in Health Services undertook the design and implementation of an integrated governance and quality assurance framework for the organization, aiming at systematic monitoring and continuous improvement of its operations.

The project included:

• Analysis of the existing organizational structure and operational processes.
• Development of a corporate and organizational governance framework.
• Design and development of a Quality Management System aligned with ISO 9001:2015.
• Mapping and standardization of core and support processes.
• Development of policies, procedures and implementation tools.
• Design of performance indicators (KPIs) and mechanisms for monitoring results.
• Development of a system for identifying, assessing and managing risks.
• Training of ESRA staff and executives on the requirements of the standard.
• Conducting internal audits and supporting the certification process.

The project resulted in the successful development and implementation of a complete Quality Management System, certified according to ISO 9001:2015.

The implementation of the system contributed to:

• Strengthening organizational governance and accountability.
• Standardizing and optimizing critical operational processes.
• Developing a culture of continuous improvement.
• Enhancing transparency and systematic decision‑making.
• Establishing measurable goals and performance indicators.
• More effective management of risks and opportunities.
• Ensuring the quality of ESRA’s educational, scientific and administrative activities.

Added Value

This project is a characteristic example of applying modern principles of governance and quality assurance within a high‑prestige international scientific organization. The experience demonstrated the ability to adapt international management standards to the needs of scientific societies and professional organizations, contributing to sustainable development, transparency and continuous improvement of the services provided to their members and stakeholders.
