September 17, 2026: World Patient Safety Day

This year’s message for World Patient Safety Day is “Safe Care for Life!” and is dedicated to all people living with chronic conditions.

The burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases, is recognised by international organisations as a major global challenge and an urgent call to action, given the substantial proportion of the world’s population affected by these conditions.

People living with NCDs are required to manage an often complex health condition over the medium and long term. This may involve frequent interactions with health services, lifestyle changes and, in many cases, reliance on support networks. Safety must be ensured across the entire continuum of care – from prevention, early detection, and accurate diagnosis to treatment, safe transitions of care and long-term management – across healthcare settings, homes and communities.

Strong and integrated health systems, strengthened primary healthcare, a well-supported health workforce, equitable access and effective communication are essential prerequisites for preventing avoidable harm.

As an active participant in the Global Patient Safety Network and the World Health Organization’s global initiatives over the past six years, the Euro-Mediterranean Institute for Quality and Safety in Health Services is publishing an information report dedicated to noncommunicable diseases. The report presents key data and highlights the strategic priorities developed by WHO to empower both people living with NCDs and the health services providing their care.

The information bulletin is available here.

As part of the celebration of World Patient Safety Day 2026 (WPSD 2026), the Euro-Mediterranean Institute for Quality and Safety in Health Services, Avedis Donabedian is announcing a survey using a specially designed questionnaire.

The questionnaire will be available in the coming days.

Stay tuned and take part in the survey!

Your participation helps highlight the importance of patient safety.

Safe care for life – free from harm, at every stage and in every care setting.
