World Thrombosis Day, established by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), is a global initiative observed annually on 13 October. The campaign aims to raise awareness of thrombosis by highlighting its causes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, as well as its evidence-based prevention and treatment.
This initiative aligns with the World Health Assembly’s global target of reducing premature deaths from non-communicable diseases by 25% by 2025 and supports the World Health Organization’s Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases.
13 October was designated as World Thrombosis Day by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in honour of the birth of the German physician Rudolf Virchow in 1821. Virchow introduced the concept of “thrombosis” and made significant contributions to the understanding of this often misunderstood and underdiagnosed condition.
The theme for 2024 is “Move Against Thrombosis.”
